Rangers Suffer Shock Europa League Defeat To Aris Limassol

October 05, (THEWILL) – Glasgow Rangers endured a dreadful night in Cyprus on Thursday, as they slipped to a shock 2-1 defeat against Aris Limassol in the UEFA Europa League. Former Gers midfielder, Steven Davis, took charge of the Scottish side on an interim basis following the weekend sacking of manager, Michael Beale.

However, Davis was unable to inspire a response from the players as Rangers produced a lifeless first half display. The writing was on the wall after just nine minutes when defender Alex Moucketou-Moussounda rose unchallenged to head Limassol into the lead. Rangers struggled to create any openings and looked vulnerable every time the hosts broke forward.

The Light Blues’ misery was compounded on the hour mark as Warren Shavy doubled Limassol’s advantage with a cool finish. There was a glimmer of hope for Rangers 10 minutes later when forward Abdallah Sima pulled a goal back. But despite heavy late pressure, the visitors could not force an equaliser.

The 2-1 defeat leaves Rangers’ Europa League campaign in jeopardy ahead of back-to-back games against Sparta Prague. It compounds a miserable week for Rangers after their shock league defeat to Aberdeen at the weekend.

The Gers now face a huge test away to St Mirren on Sunday as they attempt to keep pace with bitter rivals Celtic in the title race. Based on Thursday’s abysmal display, the managerless side faces a huge uphill battle to turn their season around.
