November 26, (THEWILL) – Poland defeated Saudi Arabia 2-0 on Saturday in a match where Robert Lewandowski finally scored his first World Cup goal, helping the Poles move closer to making the knockout round for the first time in 36 years.
Poland had been denied a first win when their talisman Lewandowski missed a penalty against Mexico, but at the Education City Stadium, he and the squad made up for it by defeating Saudi Arabia and completely opening up Group C.
Wojciech Szczesny was hailed as a hero in the most recent instalment of penalty drama after denying Salem Al Dawsari, even though Saudi Arabia were generally more impressive than in their smash-and-grab victory over Argentina.
This time around, however, when Saudi Arabia again fell behind, they were unable to recover after the penalty save, Lewandowski helped Piotr Zielinski score the game’s first goal and then, much later, scored a game-winning goal to secure Poland’s victory and put them four points ahead of Lionel Messi and company.
