December 04, (THEWILL) – France defeated Poland 3-1 in the World Cup round of 16 on Sunday, with Olivier Giroud opening the scoring to become his nation’s all-time leading scorer and Kylian Mbappe adding a brace to secure the win.
At the Al Thumama Stadium, Giroud’s goal in the 44th minute gave France the advantage as the striker for one goal over fellow former Arsenal and Les Bleus forward Thierry Henry’s goal-scoring record for the French national team.
Mbappe increased the lead for Didier Deschamps’ squad and scored another just before the end of regulation time to put himself two goals ahead of the goal-scoring field in Qatar.
Poland had earlier fought back against the defending world champions and even if there was not real shot at coming back from a three-goal disadvantage, Robert Lewandoski scored a last-minute goal after converting a retaken penalty.
Later today, England will take on Africa’s representatives Senegal with France watching and waiting to see which of the two will secure victory to face Les Bleus in the quarter-finals of the Qatar World Cup.
