November 27, (THEWILL) – Germany held Spain to a 1-1 draw at the Al Bayt Stadium, as Niclas Fullkrug came off the bench to earn Germany its first point in a World Cup game in Qatar.
Alvaro Morata, a substitute for Spain, scored the game’s first goal in the second half of the Group E game of heavyweights on Sunday, in Doha.
After being shocked by Japan in their initial encounter, Fullkrug, nevertheless, ensured Germany did not suffer back-to-back losses by levelling the score with seven minutes remaining of regulation time.
The result means Germany must now defeat Costa Rica and hope that La Roja do them a favour in order to retain any chance of making it out of the group stage. Spain remains top after the draw, ahead of their final match against Japan.
The final round of matches in this tough Group E slate will be simultaneously played on Thursday, and there is all to play for as all four — Spain, Japan, Costa Rica and Germany — have the potential to go through.
