December 03, (THEWILL) – Cameroon’s Indomitable Lions were unable to avoid an early World Cup departure despite Vincent Aboubakar’s last-second goal that earned them a 1-0 victory over Brazil on Friday.
The Selecao were able to win Group G although coach Tite made nine changes to his team, after they confirmed their place in the round of 16 in their last victory against Switzerland. The changes however led to a fragmented Selecao performance at the Lusail Stadium against Cameroon.
Still, Devis Epassy had to make several excellent saves to keep Cameroon in the game before Aboubakar nodded in a winner in stoppage time for Rigobert Song’s team. However, Aboubakar was then shown a second yellow card for taking off his shirt to celebrate.
Their win, however, was ultimately without value as Switzerland narrowly defeated Serbia 3-2 in the second group match, guaranteeing Brazil would win the pool and Cameroon will be heading home with Switzerland as runners up.
South Korea and Brazil will compete for a spot in the quarterfinals on Monday as Group H runners-up and Group G winners, respectively.
