SAN FRANCISCO, January 02, (THEWILL) – Former Tottenham Hotspur manager, Mauricio Pochettino has been officially unveiled as manager of French giants Paris Saint-Germain. The Argentine boss will be in the dugout for PSG’s Ligue 1 clash against Saint-Etienne on Wednesday, January 6, and for his first game on the sidelines of his new team.
The 48-year-old, who played for PSG as a defender in the early 2000s, has been out of a job since he was dismissed by Spurs in November 2019, only a few months after shepherding the North London club to their first Champions League final.
He succeeds the German tactician Thomas Tuchel, who guided PSG to the Champions League final in August 2019 which they narrowly lost to German football juggernauts, Bayern Munich.
The reasons for Tuchel’s firing which came after a 4-0 win over Racing Strasbourg were not made public and the club waited five days before making his termination official. Rumours attribute it to some comments he made which were poorly translated and ruffled some feathers internally.
Currently, PSG are third in the Ligue 1 standings behind joint leaders Olympique Lyonnais and Lille who are both on 36 points while the Paris champions are hot on their heels with 35 points after 17 matches.
Although key pointman, Brazilian forward Neymar Jnr is out injured, Pochettino can count on striker Kylian Mbappe to keep them competitive as he aims to keep the title-winning streak going in the French capital.
