July 05, (THEWILL) – Following the termination of Mauricio Pochettino’s contract at Paris Saint-Germain, the Ligue 1 champions have announced the appointment of Christophe Galtier, as his replacement.
In the 2021/2022 season, PSG won the league by a margin of 15 points, but Pochettino was fired on Tuesday for failing to lead them to their first ever UEFA Champions League title. Soon after the confirmation of Pochettino’s exit, Galtier was given the job at PSG and had the support of the club’s new Sporting Director Luis Campos.
Campos and Galtier previously collaborated at Lille to form the squad that narrowly beat PSG to the Ligue 1 championship in the 2020/2021 campaign. Days after they won that Ligue 1 title, Galtier joined Nice from Lille. He only stayed on the French Riviera for one season, finishing fifth and making it to the Coupe de France final, before departing late last month.
Only a few hours before Galtier and PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi attended a news conference, Pochettino’s resignation was officially announced. It became Galtier’s task to put an end to PSG’s UCL drought after their most recent defeat in the tournament, a second-leg loss to eventual champions Real Madrid in the round of 16. He is the sixth manager of PSG since 2012.
