January 09, (THEWILL) – Roberto Martinez has been appointed as the head coach of the Portuguese national team.

The 49-year-old replaces Fernando Santos, who stepped down after Portugal’s surprise elimination from the World Cup at the hands of Morocco. Martinez was previously the head coach of Belgium, leading them to a third-place finish in the 2018 World Cup.

Martinez has reportedly signed a four-year contract with Portugal. One of Martinez’s first tasks will be to determine the international future of Cristiano Ronaldo, who has recently joined a club in Saudi Arabia and has not yet retired from the national team.

Portugal will begin their Euro 2024 qualification campaign with a match against Liechtenstein on March 23rd.
