June 27, (THEWILL) – Italian Serie B side, Sampdoria, have announced the appointment of former AC Milan and Juventus midfielder, Andrea Pirlo, as their new coach on a two-year deal.
The 44-year-old Pirlo, who lifted the World Cup trophy with Italy in 2006, previously had a one-year stint as the coach of Juventus during the 2020/2021 season, following a brief period coaching their under-23 team. Despite leading Juventus to triumphs in the Coppa Italia and Supercoppa, Pirlo was dismissed from his position after the team finished fourth in Serie A.
In June 2022, he then took charge of Turkey’s top-tier side, Fatih Karagumruk SK. Although slightly productive, Pirlo’s time at Fatih Karagumruk SK came to an end in May 2023. The club, which had earned promotion to the top flight in 2020, finished seventh in the 2022-23 Turkish Super Lig.
Now, Pirlo is set to embark on a new challenge with Sampdoria, who will be competing in Serie B next season following their relegation from the top tier. In the 2022/2023 campaign, Sampdoria endured a disappointing season, finishing at the bottom of Serie A with just three wins and a staggering 25 defeats.
Pirlo’s appointment as the new coach of Sampdoria brings a wealth of experience and expertise to the club. His impressive playing career, combined with his time playing as one of the icons of Serie A and his previous coaching roles at Juventus and Fatih Karagumruk SK, will undoubtedly provide a fresh perspective and direction for Sampdoria as they seek to quickly return to Serie A.
