May 01, (THEWILL) – Jurgen Klopp has come under scrutiny after being yellow carded for his celebration during Liverpool’s side’s 4-3 win against Tottenham Hotspur in the English Premier League.
Klopp criticised referee Paul Tierney for giving what he believed was a soft free-kick against Mohamed Salah in the build-up to Tottenham’s equaliser, and claimed that what Tierney said to him when issuing the caution was “not okay”.
Klopp’s frustrations have led him to question the referee’s history with Liverpool, citing a fixture against Tottenham in 2021 when Harry Kane should have received a red card. In response to Klopp’s criticisms, the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) has released a statement stating that Tierney’s actions were not improper.
“Match officials in the Premier League are recorded in all games via a communications system and having fully reviewed the audio of referee Paul Tierney from today’s fixture, we can confirm he acted in a professional manner throughout including when issuing the caution to the Liverpool manager,” the statement read.
Despite the PGMOL’s assurance, Klopp remains dissatisfied with Tierney’s performance. “How he looks at me, I don’t understand it. In England, nobody has to clarify these situations, it’s really tricky and hard to understand. But again? He was refereeing against Tottenham [in 2021] where Harry Kane should have got a red card,” Klopp had stated in his initial post-match comments.
