September 20, (THEWILL) – Tottenham Hotspur have been dealt a major blow, as Ivan Perisic is unlikely to play again this season, after suffering a serious knee injury in training.
The experienced Croatian winger sustained an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury to his right knee during a non-contact training session. Perisic will now undergo surgery and face a lengthy spell on the sidelines.
The 34-year-old had made an impressive start to the 2023/2024 campaign under new manager, Ange Postecoglou, after joining on a free transfer from Inter Milan last summer. He registered an assist in Saturday’s dramatic 2-1 comeback win over Sheffield United.
However, Perisic’s season appears to be over prematurely with Tottenham confirming his ACL injury is “complex”. His contract expires next summer and it is unlikely he will return before it concludes.
Beyond that detail, this setback is also a worry for Croatia ahead of Euro 2024. Perisic is his country’s third most-capped player and was expected to play a key role next summer, with Croatia already on the verge of qualification. The winger now faces a race to be fit for the continental competition.
