Penalty Misses See Milan Play Out Thrilling Draw With Bologna

January 27, (THEWILL) – AC Milan were held to a dramatic 2-2 draw by visitors Bologna on Saturday night, missing the opportunity to close the gap on the top two teams in Serie A. In an incident-packed match at the San Siro, the hosts twice failed to convert penalties and were made to pay when Bologna equalised from the spot in the 95th minute through Riccardo Orsolini.

The game was paused in the 16th minute as Milan fans lit up the stadium in a show of support for goalkeeper Mike Maignan, who suffered racial abuse last weekend. Play resumed with chances at both ends, before Joshua Zirkzee opened the scoring for Bologna just before the half-hour mark. Ruben Loftus-Cheek soon equalised for the hosts, who were then awarded a penalty shortly before half-time – but Olivier Giroud’s tame effort was easily saved.

The second half brought more drama as Loftus-Cheek headed Milan into an 83rd-minute lead, which seemed to have won it. Yet, there was late heartbreak when Theo Hernandez struck the upright with their second penalty before Orsolini kept his cool in added time to snatch a share of the spoils for Bologna.

The result leaves third-placed Milan still trailing city rivals Inter by five points, while League leaders Juventus are a further two points clear at the Serie A summit as the title race continues to intrigue.
