PDP Fixes National Convention For Abuja In October

August 28, (THEWILL) – The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has chosen Abuja as the venue for its National Convention.
This was part of the decision reached at the party’s 92nd National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting on Saturday, which was presided over by Acting National Chairman, Elder Yemi Akinwonmi.
The convention had earlier on Friday been slated to hold on October 29-30 by the National Caucus of the party.
The NEC also agreed to reconvene in September.
The PDP has been recently embroiled in a leadership crisis as some embittered members call for the resignation of Prince Uche Secondus, it’s National Chairman.
Secondus faces accusations of having “no clear road map, blue print or policy programme for the PDP.”
A Rivers State High Court had on Tuesday issued an interim order in a suit No HC/240/2021, restraining Secondus from assuming the office of National Chairman of the PDP.
But a Kebbi High Court on Thursday granted a counter order, which reinstated him as national chairman of the PDP.
THEWILL had reported a dramatic twist in the leadership crisis rocking the party as a court in Calabar, Cross River State, on Friday barred Secondus from this Saturday’s NEC meeting of the party.
The injunction granted by a Cross River High Court also barred the PDP from allowing Secondus to function as National Chairman.
In obedience to the new court order, Secondus was absent at Saturday’s NEC meeting,
At the meeting, Akinwonmi said consultations within the party are yielding desired results.
He condemned the country’s deteriorating security situation and high cost of living owing to the weakness of the naira against other currencies.
Meanwhile, the Chairman of the party’s Board of Trustees, Senator Walid Jubril, said the problems in the party are not insurmountable; adding that challenges and disputes are a fact of life in any party, but how they are resolved matters most.
He advised the party not to fail Nigerians, as it remains the last hope of citizens.
“There is no way the PDP can win elections if it is divided,” he added.
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, also expressed confidence in the party’s internal mechanism to resolve its crisis.
He also took a swipe at the incumbent government, insisting that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) government has taken the country backward since they came into power in 2015.
