Palliative: Enugu To Review Social Register – Information Commissioner

September 03, (THEWILL) – The Enugu State Government says it plans to review the social register to ascertain the true number of the less privileged in the State ahead of the distribution of palliatives to cushion the effect of fuel subsidy removal.

The Commissioner for Information in the State, Hon Eze Aka, disclosed this while interacting with newsmen.

Aka said that the State Government is working to ensure a transparent and all-inclusive sharing formula that would satisfy the generality of the people.

“We intend to review the last social register used by the previous administrations by removing fake names, the dead, and those that have relocated to other states, amongst others. Then, we want to add those who are truly less privileged,” the Commissioner said.

He also said that the State Government planned to involve reputable and responsible members of the communities at the ward levels in the implementation of the palliative programme.

He said: “If you come to every ward, you have Reverend Fathers, pastors, traditional rulers and youth leaders. So, in each community, it might not be easy for all of them to collude to divert these things.”

Aka also said that the media would be fully involved in the exercise to ensure transparency. He, however, said that most of the items were yet to get to the State.

“Some of them will be coming in the form of items, produce like edible rice, beans, cereals and some amount will be used for procurement,” he added.
