Pacquiao Saddened By IOC Decision To Deny Him Paris 2024 Slot

February 19, (THEWILL) – Philippine boxer Manny Pacquiao has conceded that his hopes of competing at the 2024 Paris Olympics are over. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) rejected a special request from the Philippine Olympic Committee for the legendary fighter to be granted a place at the Games.

While clearly disappointed, Pacquiao said he respected the decision. The IOC has a maximum age limit of 40 for boxers. At 45 years old, Pacquiao is ineligible despite never having fought at an Olympics during his iconic decades-long professional career.

The Philippines had requested a “universality place” for their national hero. Such spots are occasionally given to smaller countries to help athletes qualify who would usually struggle to meet Olympic criteria. However, the IOC was unswayed.

Philippine Olympic Committee President, Abraham Tolentino, claimed the ruling denied the country a guaranteed podium finish or potentially even its first gold medal in Olympic boxing.

Pacquiao thanked his supporters and said he looked forward to continuing to bring pride and honour to the Philippines inside the boxing ring. It was confirmed he has an exhibition bout in Thailand scheduled for April.
