August 26, (THEWILL) — What should have been a routine flight from Lagos to Atlanta has turned into a two-day ordeal for passengers after Delta Air Lines cancelled the service twice, first because of a mechanical problem and later over a shortage of available crew.
The affected service, DL9895, was scheduled to operate from the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos, to Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) on Sunday, August 23, 2026.
Passengers arrived at the airport expecting to begin the long-haul journey to the United States, only to be confronted with a cancellation attributed to a mechanical fault detected during pre-departure safety checks.
They were subsequently informed that the flight would be rescheduled after the maintenance issue had been addressed.
But the rescheduled service did not take off as expected. On Tuesday, August 25, Delta cancelled the flight again, this time citing an operational problem involving crew availability.
“We are sorry. Your flight DL9895 from Lagos (LOS) – Atlanta (ATL) was cancelled due to an issue that limited crew availability,” the airline said in a message sent directly to affected passengers.
The situation has generated further frustration over the handling of passengers during the disruption, particularly claims that affected travellers were left without accommodation while waiting for alternative flights.

Under Part 19 of the Nigeria Civil Aviation Regulations, which deals specifically with passenger rights and airline obligations, consumer-protection provisions cover delays and cancellations as well as compensation and other forms of passenger assistance.
The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) also states that, for qualifying international flight cancellations, passengers may be entitled to compensation of 30 per cent of the fare or ticket price where they were not informed at least seven days before the scheduled departure, subject to the circumstances and applicable exceptions.
