December 16, (THEWILL) – Victor Osimhen scored and provided an assist as Napoli returned to winning ways in Serie A on Saturday night, with a 2-1 victory over struggling Cagliari. The Nigerian striker broke the deadlock in the 69th minute, heading home the opener. Osimhen then turned provider, showing great skill to set up match-winner, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, who smashed in at the back post.
The first half at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium was filled with missed chances for the I Partenopei. Defender Amir Rrahmani came closest when his powerful header smashed against the upright. Cagliari briefly threatened through Tommaso Augello and Adam Obert but failed to seriously test goalkeeper Alex Meret.
Three goals were then shared in a whirlwind six-minute period after the break. The Rossoblu equalised just three minutes after Osimhen’s opener courtesy of Leonardo Pavoletti, the former Napoli man rifling home from close range.
However, Kvaratskhelia had the final say in the match in the 75th minute after his assist from Osimhen. A late Cagliari chance went begging as the home side held on for three vital points.
The win temporarily moves Napoli up to 4th position in Serie A as they bounced back from consecutive domestic losses. Visitors Cagliari remain just one point above the drop zone in 16th.
