Ortom Extols Buhari For Renaming Varsity After Tarka

January 26, (THEWILL) – Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom, has said that President Muhammadu Buhari, will be appreciated even in death for what he has done for the country and for renaming the Federal University of Agriculture, Makurdi after the minority right crusader, the late Joseph Sarwuan Tarka.

The Governor made the disclosure on Wednesday, when the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of Joseph Sarwuan Tarka University, Makurdi, Mrs Edith Chidinma Uwajumogu, led members of the Council and management staff of the institution on a courtesy visit to him at the Benue Peoples House, Makurdi.

“To rename the institution from the University of Agriculture to Joseph Sarwuan Tarka University, the man that was at the forefront in fighting for minority rights of the people of the country, especially the Middle Belt region, is a great honour that President Buhari has done in recent times,” he said.

According to Governor Ortom, even though he had no opportunity of meeting with Tarka before his death, he learnt of his positive attributes for the development of the society and decided to emulate him, promising to continue to voice out when things are going wrong in the society.

The Governor, who faulted the acquisition of land for the establishment of the then, University of Agriculture, Makurdi, noted that money meant for compensation of the natives was diverted by the handlers hence the relocation of the affected beneficiaries becomes a problem to date.

He directed the Chairman of the Peace Committee, the Commissioner of Land, Survey and Minerals, Dr Bernard Umenger, to meet with the management of the institution and the host community with the aim of resolving the face-off amicably.

According to him, due to paucity of funds, the State Government may not be able to meet up the request for donating buses and tarring the road from the institution to the MUCAST junction, noting that Benue people are direct beneficiaries of all federal agencies operating in the state.

He commended the Council and management for finding time to come and brief him on what they intend to do for the growth of the institution.

Speaking, the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council, Mrs Edith Uwajumogu, informed the Governor that the host community has renewed hostilities by pulling down the perimeter fence of the institution.

While calling on the Governor to intervene, she listed other challenges to include lack of vehicles to ply internal routes within the institution.

Earlier, the Acting Vice Chancellor of the institution, Professor Paul Aunde Annune, commended Governor Ortom for taking steps towards securing the lives and property of people of the state as well as assistance to the University.
