August 30, (THEWILL) – Wolverhampton Wanderers manager, Gary O’Neil, has said he “fully expects” midfielder, Matheus Nunes, to stay at the club despite interest from Manchester City.
The 25-year-old Portugal international joined Wolves last summer from Sporting Lisbon for a club record fee, reportedly around £45 million. However, the midfielder has stopped training with Wolves, as he tries to push through a move to Premier League champions, City. Pep Guardiola’s side are looking to bolster their midfield after Kevin De Bruyne’s injury, which will keep him out for at least 4 months.
City had an initial bid of around £47 million for Nunes rejected last week. Speaking after Wolves’ 5-0 EFL Cup win over Blackpool, O’Neil said Nunes’ absence from training was “his choice” following City’s bid. But the manager said he anticipates the player remaining at Molineux beyond Thursday’s transfer deadline.
“As far as I’m aware, there’s been no improved bid. Matheus Nunes is still our player,” O’Neil stated. The manager added that he is confident a resolution will be found and said he expects to have further private discussions with the player in the coming days.
Nunes still has over four years left on his Wolves contract. They face a trip to Crystal Palace on Saturday in their next English Premier League fixture. O’Neil will be hoping to have the protracted transfer saga resolved by then.
