Olympic City Tokyo Records 1,763 New COVID-19 Cases This Sunday

July 25, (THEWILL) – The pandemic is not relenting in the Tokyo metropolitan area as the government confirmed on Sunday that the daily infection rates stood at 1,763 of new cases.

This comes even as the declared state of emergency still persists in the capital city.

The figure is an increase from the 755 registered a week ago, and is said to be the highest for a Sunday since they began making daily updates of infection rates from COVID-19.

So far, the raging coronavirus daily tally in the capital has exceeded 1,000 for six straight days, in the face of the state of emergency in place and the gradual pick up of the vaccine rollout, which remained slow for the initial period.

Currently, a seven-day average for the Tokyo Metropolitan area through to Sunday stands at 1,453.6. That represents a 36.1 percent hike on infection rates from a week ago alone, putting a damper on the possibility of the area witnessing any relaxing of measures anytime soon.

When taken together with previous figures released by the metropolitan government, the total number of cases in Tokyo may cross the 200,000 mark by this week as it now stands at 199,291.

Inside the Olympic Village, as at Friday, there was a cumulative figure of 37 infected athletes, team officials and other Olympics stakeholders from a 169,095 total number of tests conducted which came up to about 0.02% rate, which the organisers say is not enough to cause panic or worry.
