May 16, (THEWILL) – The calendar of activities of the 2022/2023 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) Super 6 tournament has been revised by the Interim Management Committee (IMC).
The tournament, which showcases the league’s top teams, will now kick off on June 3 and culminate on Sunday, June 11. Head of Operations for the IMC, Davidson Owumi, emphasised that the schedule revision was made in collaboration with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to accommodate both the league and the ongoing Federation Cup.
“Considering that the Federation Cup Round of 16 and quarter-final fixtures are scheduled for May 24 and 28, we realised that the Super 6 could no longer commence on the initial date, as some of the teams potentially qualifying for the playoffs might also feature in the Federation Cup,” Owumi explained
Following discussions with the NFF, a new schedule was agreed upon, which will see the finals of the Federation Cup taking place after the Super 6, on June 11. According to the released calendar, participating teams are expected to arrive on June 1, while Match Officials will gather in Lagos on June 2, with the inaugural matches commencing on June 3. Each match day will feature three games, with the rest interspersed in between.
The IMC-approved format implies that the team with the highest points at the end of the matches will be declared Champions. With all six teams playing against each other, a total of 15 games will be played across five match days.
In related news, the regular season of the NPFL, which was divided into two groups, will conclude on May 21. The top three teams from each group will advance to the playoffs. As anticipation builds for the NPFL Super 6, football enthusiasts eagerly await the thrilling clashes that lie ahead.
