Not Winning African Player Award Was One Of My Biggest Regrets – Okocha

BEVERLY HILLS, July 17, (THEWILL) -Former Super Eagles captain and Ex-PSG star midfielder, Augustine ‘Jay Jay’ Okocha, says one of his biggest regrets as a player was not winning the highly regarded African Footballer of the Year (CAF) award.

The former Bolton Wanderers player stated this during a Q&A session with on-air personality, Toke Makinwa, on a Mastercard webinar.

THEWILL recalls that Okocha won the BBC African footballer of the year three consecutive times but did not win the continental award. In 1998 he lost out to Morocco’s Mustapha Hadji and came third twice behind the duo of Samuel Eto’o and Didier Drogba.

“And if I’m to say, I’ll say, I regret not winning the African Footballer of the year,” he said.

“But of course, if you look back, there’s always a time that you say oh maybe you could’ve done a bit better than you did.

“I thought I did enough to have won it because it was not a fluke that I won BBC player of the year three years in a row and not manage to win that CAF award, but I mean maybe it was not meant to be.

“Well, I think I don’t want to sound greedy, but I’ve had an amazing career, I never thought I would make it that big.”

THEWILL reports that the former Eagles captain won the 1994 African Cup of Nations with the Super Eagles.
