”In our pursuit of media development, we have strived to provide access to information, improve media infrastructure, and promote media literacy across the nation.

“These initiatives aim to bridge the gap between urban and rural areas, ensuring that every Nigerian has access to accurate and unbiased information. Moreover, we acknowledge that the media landscape is not without its challenges, including issues such as the proliferation of misinformation.

”In response, we will work collaboratively with the Nigeria Union of Journalists to enhance access to information in order to combat the menace of disinformation, fake news and hate speech. Just like I stated during the visit by the President of the NUJ to my office last week, the Bola Tinubu administration has no plans whatsoever to stifle press freedom.

“This is in recognition of the fact that a free press is vital to the development of our democracy. Democracy is not an end in itself but a means to an end. As such, I will charge the media to continue to report the development currently taking place, particularly under the leadership of our President, who has taken some bold initiatives to ensure the prosperity of our citizens and the nation in general.

”In a world where information is the lifeblood of society, the role of the media is paramount. It serves as the bridge between the government and the people, ensuring transparency, accountability and dissemination of accurate information.

”I am deeply honoured to stand before you today as we gather to celebrate the remarkable achievements in the field of media development, most importantly as a recipient of the NUJ Media Development Award. This recognition holds a special place in my heart.

“This award is not just a recognition of my efforts, but a celebration of the essential role the media plays in our society. The Nigeria Union of Journalists has consistently played a pivotal role in shaping the narrative of our nation, fostering dialogue, and championing the cause of the fourth estate. I must acknowledge the invaluable contribution of this great Union, the NUJ,” he said.
