December 15, (THEWILL) – Fresh off winning the CAF Best Goalkeeper award, Nigerian shot-stopper, Chiamaka Nnadozie, made a critical penalty save to deny Real Madrid’s Olga Carmon and help Paris FC record a historic 2-1 victory over the Spanish side on Thursday night.
Goals from Julie Dufour and captain Gaëtane Thiney, gave Sandrine Soubeyrand’s side a comfortable lead inside the opening six minutes. After parrying an earlier effort from Athenea Del Castillo, Nnadozie was called into action in the 28th minute to stop her fifth penalty since July.
Despite enjoying the majority of possession, Real Madrid struggled to create clear chances in the first half. The visitors got a goal back after the break when Caroline Møller Hansen netted from a Hayley Raso cross, but Paris FC held firm despite waves of late attacks. Zornoza came closest to an equaliser after her shot hit the bar.
While not part of the club’s free tickets scheme, over 10,000 fans packed the stadium to witness Paris FC take points off their prestigious Spanish opponents, a historic record attendance. After the final whistle, captain Thiney rallied support for the club’s next clash on Sunday – the Derby de la Capitale against local rivals Paris Saint-Germain.
The upset win was Paris FC’s first points gained in the 2023/2024 UEFA Champions League group stages and, for Real Madrid, it was a night to forget. However, Paris FC supporters will remember it as a historic result for years to come.
