August 31, (THEWILL) – Arsenal striker, Eddie Nketiah, has received his first senior England call-up, being named in Gareth Southgate’s squad for the upcoming Euro 2024 qualifier against Ukraine and friendly match versus Scotland.
The 24-year-old has scored two goals in the Gunners’ opening three English Premier League matches this season whilst deputising for the injured Gabriel Jesus. Despite Nketiah’s lack of caps at senior level, his goalscoring for the England under-21s cannot be ignored, with 16 goals in 17 appearances.
Chelsea’s Levi Colwill joins Nketiah in earning a first Three Lions call-up after breaking into the Blues’ starting XI under Mauricio Pochettino. There was no place for Raheem Sterling though, even after the forward’s bright start for Chelsea in this campaign. Also, John Stones misses out through injury, alongside Manchester United’s Luke Shaw.
James Maddison and Eberechi Eze are rewarded for their fine form over the past year with inclusions in Southgate’s latest squad. The pair are likely to be handed opportunities in the friendly match versus Scotland at Hampden Park.
England currently top Group C in Euro 2024 qualifying after winning their opening four matches. Ukraine sit second having played one game fewer, whilst Italy are third following defeats in their two matches so far – one of which came early this year against 10-man England.
