April 20, (THEWILL) – Pushing the boundaries of human endurance, Nigerian chess grandmaster, Tunde Onakoya, has broken the world record for the longest chess marathon.

The previous record stood at 56 hours, nine minutes, and 37 seconds, set in 2018 by a Norwegian duo. Onakoya, however, played continuously for an astonishing 58 hours in the heart of New York City’s iconic Times Square.

This extraordinary feat was fueled by a noble cause – raising $1 million for underprivileged children worldwide through Onakoya’s “Chess in Slums Africa” initiative. The non-profit organisation has been transforming lives in disadvantaged communities across Lagos by providing chess education and mentorship and fostering critical thinking and life skills.

Although aiming for an ambitious 60-hour target, Onakoya’s resilience carried him through the gruelling challenge defying a stomach upset and bolstered by an outpouring of support from fans, dignitaries, and the Nigerian diaspora. As he persevered, messages of encouragement flooded in from across the globe, celebrating Onakoya’s remarkable determination and the positive impact his efforts would have on underprivileged youth.

The chess grandmaster’s triumph resonated deeply with Nigerians online, as Onakoya is seen as an inspiration and a shining example of the nation’s potential for greatness. Vice President Kashim Shettima and Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, were among the prominent figures who lauded Onakoya’s accomplishment, recognising it as a testament to the power of perseverance and the pursuit of a greater cause.

With nearly $100,000 raised thus far, Onakoya’s historic 58-hour achievement promises to catalyse the global expansion of “Chess in Slums Africa”, empowering countless more children with the transformative power of chess education.
