July 03, (THEWILL) – Team Nigeria displayed their athleticism at the 2nd African Beach Games, clinching a varied collection of 12 medals to finish 5th.
The team’s accomplishments spanned various sports, highlighting the versatility and talent on display. Compared to their previous performance in Cape Verde, where they secured only one gold medal and finished seventh overall in the medal standings, this achievement marks a significant improvement in their outing.
Blessing Oborodudu stood out with a gold medal in beach wrestling, while Oluwadamilola Oyedepo and Kayode Samuel secured Nigeria’s first gold in the Badminton Mixed Doubles competition. Simeon Akinsola and Sunday Chibuzo also excelled in the Men’s Triple event, contributing to Nigeria’s success. Notably, Nigeria’s triumphs in Teqball and wrestling further showcased the nation’s dedication to sporting excellence.
Tony Nezianya, the Nigerian Olympic Committee’s (NOC) public relations officer, commended the team’s outstanding performance, stating: “This admirable accomplishment is a testament to the remarkable progress we have made since the last games.”
The NOC President, Habu Gumel, also congratulated the Nigerian athletes for their remarkable performance and expressed his commitment to using their success in Tunisia as a catalyst to ignite a passion for beach sports and sports in general among Nigerians.
