July 27, (THEWILL) -In a thrilling match that left fans on the edge of their seats, Nigeria shocked co-hosts Australia with a stunning 3-2 victory at the Women’s World Cup in Brisbane.
The Super Falcons demonstrated their resilience and determination, coming from behind to secure a crucial win that puts them at the top of Group B and on the brink of qualifying for the knockout phase. Uchenna Kanu, Osinachi Ohale, and substitute Asisat Oshoala were the heroes of the day, each contributing a goal to seal Africa’s first win of the tournament Down Under.
Australia started the game dominantly, putting Nigeria under intense pressure, particularly from corners. They managed to take the lead in the dying moments of the first half when Emily van Egmond capitalised on a defensive lapse to find the back of the net. However, Nigeria responded swiftly, and just three minutes later, Uchenna Kanu’s opportunistic goal levelled the score at the break.
The turning point came with the introduction of Asisat Oshoala, the former African Women’s Footballer of the Year, who made a significant impact on the match. Her 65th-minute corner led to Osinachi Ohale’s brave header, putting Nigeria ahead, and she later took full advantage of a defensive mix-up to extend the lead further. Her celebration earned her a yellow card. The co-hosts pulled one back but it was not enough to earn a point.
Nigeria’s victory marks their second upset against Australia at the Women’s World Cup, having defeated them in Canada in 2015. With this historic win, the Super Falcons are now in a favourable position to progress to the knockout phase, sitting at the top of Group B with four points. In their final group game, they will face Ireland, requiring only a draw to secure their place in the last-16.
