Nigeria Hosts First National Cross Country Race In Over Three Decades

February 15, (THEWILL) – Nigeria’s Minister of Sport, Sunday Dare, will kick off the National Cross Country race in Plateau State, on Friday, marking the first National Cross Country race in almost 40 years.

Tony Osheku, the Race Coordinator, said all necessary arrangements have been made for a successful event. He noted that this initiative was a significant step in developing a comprehensive plan to promote distance running in Nigeria.

The Coordinator restated his belief that with the right training, Nigerian distance runners had the potential and wherewithal to compete favourably in international events and, like their East African competitors, bring home medals and create an earning stream for the country.

The National Cross Country race is aimed at encouraging athletes of Nigerian origin to incorporate cross-country training into their workout routine, as it remains an essential part of building both physical and mental stamina.

According to Osheku, the world’s most successful distance running countries prioritise cross-country training and competition, and Nigeria is going to do the same. He added that the Jos race was a way to draw attention to the importance of cross-country training for the future of distance running in Nigeria. The event will take place on February 18, the same day as the World Cross Country Championships in Bathurst, Australia.
