September 17, (THEWILL) – The Federal Government has congratulated the Government and people of the United Mexican States on the country’s 216th Independence Anniversary, while expressing Nigeria’s desire to deepen bilateral economic and commercial cooperation with Mexico.
Nigeria in a statement signed by the Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Oluwafemi Adeniyi, recognised Mexico’s long nation-building journey, describing it as one marked by courage, determination, resilience and the enduring spirit of its people.
The Federal Government also acknowledged Mexico’s rich cultural heritage, noting that the country’s identity has been shaped by its diversity and communities and traditions that have survived periods of challenge and opportunity.
Beyond the anniversary greetings, Nigeria used the occasion to reaffirm its commitment to strengthening bilateral relations with Mexico, particularly in the areas of political engagement, trade, investment and consular cooperation.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Nigeria and Mexico have maintained cordial diplomatic relations since the formalisation of ties in 1976. The relations, it said, have steadily expanded over the past five decades, covering political, economic and consular spheres.
A major development in the bilateral relations was the inaugural meeting of the Nigeria-Mexico Consultation Mechanism on Matters of Mutual Interest, held in Abuja in November 2025.
The Federal Government said the establishment of the consultation mechanism had created an avenue for both countries to strengthen political dialogue, expand trade and investment, improve consular cooperation and advance collaboration at the multilateral level.
Nigeria said it welcomed the growing momentum in bilateral ties and was interested in translating the relationship into greater economic opportunities for both countries.

The government particularly identified increased business exchanges and investment partnerships as areas with potential to deepen commercial relations and produce tangible benefits for Nigerians and Mexicans.
The statement also conveyed Nigeria’s goodwill to Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, her government and the people of Mexico.
“On this auspicious occasion,” the Federal Government said, it wished Sheinbaum Pardo, the Mexican government and the people of the United Mexican States continued peace, stability, progress and prosperity.
Since diplomatic ties were established in 1976, Nigeria and Mexico have maintained engagement across political and economic areas, while their cooperation has also included consular and multilateral matters.
The government said further cooperation should ultimately translate into practical benefits for the people of both countries, particularly through stronger commercial links and investment partnerships.
