Nigeria Aims To Rebound Against Ivory Coast In Second AFCON Match

January 17, (THEWILL) – The Super Eagles are determined to put Sunday’s disappointing 1-1 draw with Equatorial Guinea behind them, as they shift their focus to Thursday’s crucial Africa Cup of Nations tie against the Ivory Coast. The match at the newly-constructed Stade Olympique Alassane Ouattara in Ebimpe, is a meeting of two AFCON heavyweights that could decide who advances from Group A.

The Super Eagles captain, William Troost-Ekong, called on Nigerian fans worldwide to continue supporting the team as they look to claim a vital three points against the host nation. While frustrated with squandering opportunities against Equatorial Guinea, there remains strong belief within the squad that progression is achievable.

Portuguese coach, José Peseiro, was able to bolster his forward options by bringing in Paul Onuachu for the injured Victor Boniface and Kelechi Iheanacho is also fit enough to feature. The coach will expect a more clinical edge to unlock an obstinate Ivorian defence.

Peseiro acknowledges facing the motivated Ivory Coast in their own backyard represents an extremely tough task. However, he insists that if his side can take full advantage of chances created, they are capable of conquering their seasoned opponents. Therefore, he has dedicated time on the training ground this week to fine-tuning tactics and getting his players mentally prepared for the high stakes clash.

The two footballing powerhouses have built an extensive rivalry at the AFCON tournament and World Cup qualifiers over the years, competing in many tense, closely-fought affairs with trophies and progression on the line. Victory for either side on Thursday would stand them in good stead to advance from the group, adding extra spice to an already mouth-watering West African derby.

Peseiro will demand his squad show their quality to triumph over the Elephants and set up a winner-takes-all final group game with Guinea-Bissau.
