Boniface Scores As Leverkusen Crush Frankfurt, Extend Unbeaten Record To 48 Games

May 5, (THEWILL)- Bayer Leverkusen’s juggernaut showed no signs of slowing down as they extended their remarkable unbeaten streak in all competitions to a staggering 48 games with a dominant 5-1 victory over Eintracht Frankfurt. The win also ended Leverkusen’s five-match losing streak in away head-to-head matches against Frankfurt, further emphasising their dominance this season.

With the Bundesliga title already secured and a UEFA Europa League final on the horizon, Leverkusen’s intent was clear from the outset. Granit Xhaka’s thunderous strike from the edge of the area gave them an early lead within the first 15 minutes. Jonas Hofmann had an opportunity to double the advantage, but a last-ditch block from Willian Pacho kept Frankfurt in the game momentarily.

Frankfurt’s Hugo Ekitike equalised for the hosts with a well-taken goal from Fares Chaibi’s measured delivery shortly after the half-hour mark. The momentum seemed to shift in Frankfurt’s favour, and they wasted several promising chances, including a one-on-one opportunity squandered by Omar Marmoush. However, Patrik Schick’s powerful header from Adam Hlozek’s cross just before half-time put Leverkusen back in the lead.

After the restart, Frankfurt’s hopes of a comeback were dashed when Niels Nkounkou’s moment of madness saw him pull Nathan Tella’s shirt in the area, resulting in a penalty that was coolly converted by Exequiel Palacios. Leverkusen’s dominance was further cemented when Jeremie Frimpong tapped home the fourth goal following a lightning-quick counter-attack, leaving Frankfurt with an insurmountable task.

Despite their efforts at damage limitation, they conceded a fifth goal when Ansgar Knauff’s foul on Frimpong led to another penalty, which Victor Boniface converted. The convincing victory leaves Frankfurt needing a win from their remaining two games to secure a top-six finish, while Leverkusen’s unbeaten run now stands level with Benfica’s 59-year European record. With the opportunity to write another piece of history when they face Roma in the UEFA Europa League final on Thursday, Leverkusen’s remarkable season shows no signs of slowing down.
