March 15, (THEWILL) – Former UFC heavyweight champion, Francis Ngannou, is undergoing additional medical checks, following his devastating knockout loss to Anthony Joshua last weekend. Ngannou was dropped twice in the early rounds before a powerful right hand from Joshua ended the contest.
Despite being knocked unconscious, the 37-year-old Cameroonian states that he remained lucid after regaining consciousness. “I remember everything from that fight night and coming back to the locker room,” Ngannou remarked. “Basically, I was conscious right after, and since then, everything has been good.”
However, Ngannou acknowledges the importance of a thorough medical evaluation to ensure his long-term health. “For the longevity of the sport, we better check and find out if there’s anything that could be done to get better now,” he explained. “I feel healthy, but I still need more checkups.”
The punishing knockout has raised concerns about Ngannou’s future in the sport. Repeated head trauma is a serious issue in combat sports, and Ngannou’s team will likely exercise caution before clearing him to compete again.
