March 18, (THEWILL) – Newcastle secured a thrilling comeback win against Nottingham Forest, to move to within a point of fourth-placed Tottenham in the English Premier League table.
Despite going down early, as Emmanuel Dennis intercepted Sven Botman’s pass back to Nick Pope and chipped the ball over the onrushing goalkeeper, Eddie Howe’s men kept their heads at the City Ground on Friday night, handing Steve Cooper’s men their first home defeat since September.
The visitors missed several opportunities in the first half, with Alexander Isak and Joe Willock both hitting the woodwork. But they found a leveller just before the break, as Isak improvised with his shin to beat the Forest goalkeeper with an acrobatic finish.
Elliot Anderson thought he had scored the winner soon after the restart, but a VAR check ruled Sean Longstaff offside in the buildup. However, Newcastle’s persistence paid off in the dying minutes, with Isak converting a penalty to send the travelling fans into bedlam.
The win keeps Newcastle’s hopes of a top-four finish alive, while Forest will be looking nervously over their shoulders as they face Wolverhampton Wanderers next. Meanwhile, Howe will be delighted with his team’s fighting spirit and will hope they can continue their momentum in their next match against Manchester United.
