September 24, (THEWILL) – Newcastle United recorded their joint-biggest victory in Premier League history on Sunday, demolishing Sheffield United 8-0 at Bramall Lane. The Magpies had eight different goal-scorers in a dominant performance against the struggling Blades.
The rout kicked off in the 21st minute when Sean Longstaff swept home a cross from Anthony Gordon, though the goal was controversial as the ball appeared to hit Gordon’s hand in the build-up. Dan Burn headed in Newcastle’s second from a Kieran Trippier set piece on the half-hour mark. Trippier turned provider again in the 35th minute, with Sven Botman guiding his delivery into the far corner with a deft header.
Callum Wilson nodded in another pinpoint Trippier cross in the 55th minute to make it 4-0. Gordon got himself on the scoresheet shortly after, curling a delightful effort into the bottom corner from inside the box. Miguel Almiron added a sixth in the 70th minute after racing through Sheffield’s porous defence and slotting past the keeper.
Bruno Guimaraes slammed in Newcastle’s seventh after pouncing on a loose ball in the area. The scoring was rounded off by substitute Alexander Isak, who drifted past a defender and fired into the top corner to seal an 8-0 demolition.
The result equals Newcastle’s record English Premier League win and condemns the Blades to their worst ever home defeat in the top flight.
