October 16, (THEWILL) – Newcastle United held Manchester United to a barren draw at Old Trafford, denting their top-four ambitions even further at this point of the season.
After a lacklustre performance in which they barely looked like they would be able to stop Newcastle before a flurry in the last minutes, United are currently three points behind fourth-placed Chelsea.
With Joelinton being twice denied by the goal frame, Eddie Howe’s visitors had the better chances earlier in the game and could have taken the lead if they converted their chances. They were fortunate to not be punished, surviving a late scare. So far this season, Newcastle has only lost once.
It means the Magpies are still in sixth place, one point behind Manchester United, and their performance on Sunday is only the latest indication that not only will they be a constant threat to the “big six” this season, but it will be interesting to see how far they go.
On Wednesday, when Newcastle hosts Everton, Ten Hag’s team will meet Tottenham at Old Trafford.
