Newcastle Fans Attacked By PSG Ultras In France Ahead Of Crucial UCL Tie

November 28, (THEWILL) – Ahead of the UEFA Champions League match between Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) and Newcastle United on Tuesday, Newcastle fans visiting Paris were attacked by PSG ultras. Video footage surfaced on social media showing Newcastle supporters barricading themselves as attackers threw flares, chairs and other objects at them.

Windows were smashed and Newcastle fans tried to prevent the PSG ultras from entering the bar they occupied. The Newcastle United Supporters Trust issued a statement urging fans in Paris to “stick together and look after each other.” The violence follows similar clashes when the teams previously met in October. Then too, PSG ultras were involved in violence with Newcastle fans post-match.

French police had attempted to reduce the risk of violence by requesting early bar closures around the match. However, despite precautions, PSG ultras still targeted Newcastle supporters out in Paris before the pivotal UCL tie. Newcastle manager Eddie Howe revealed his team is motivated by a “fear of failure” going into the must-win contest with Newcastle currently at the bottom of their group.

The attacks and vandalism in Paris were unprovoked, occurring the night before the match. Newcastle previously upset PSG by winning 4-1 when the clubs met in October. Videos showed coordinated intimidation by masked PSG hooligans throwing projectiles and charging at Newcastle supporters. Police intervention successfully blocked attempts by the ultras to enter the pub holding Newcastle fans.

The violence raises concerns over fan safety and security plans around the high-stakes match in Paris. Newcastle hopes to boost its chances of advancing but now must also focus on protecting its fans from further assault. Authorities are investigating the attacks and tightening security to prevent potential retribution and clashes at the match itself on Tuesday night.
