Netherlands Soundly Beat Belgium 4-1 In Nations Cup Opening Game

June 04, (THEWILL) – On Friday, the Netherlands deservedly defeated Belgium for the first time since September 1997, winning 4-1 in their Nations League opening tie in Brussels.

Louis van Gaal’s team put an end to a 25-year wait for an Oranje triumph over their nearest neighbours. Steven Bergwijn – who is rumoured to be on his way back to the Netherlands with Ajax – got the visitors off to a good start, before Memphis Depay and Denzel Dumfries scored a superb effort.

The Netherlands hinted at a return to form in their first competitive match of the World Cup year against elite opponents, whose big names disintegrated as both Romelu Lukaku and Eden Hazard were withdrawn early, Michy Batshuayi’s last-gasp goal providing scant comfort for Belgium.

For the first quarter of an hour, Belgium was in control, but they succumbed to a bombardment of Dutch raids, and the first goal came soon enough.

But, after such a long wait to beat Belgium, Van Gaal’s side would not settle for a single goal, adding real polish after the break in a historic victory.

It was unsurprising to hear the home crowd turn against Belgium, who were trounced by a team ranked eight places below them by FIFA.
