August 05, (THEWILL) – The South African women’s national soccer team saw their inspiring World Cup run come to an end on Sunday, with a 2-0 loss against the Netherlands.
The first Dutch goal came early, in the 9th minute, off a corner kick. South Africa’s goalkeeper, Kaylin Swart, made some great saves to keep things close. However, in the 68th minute, a mistake by Swart allowed the Netherlands to score again and seal the win.
South African striker, Thembi Kgatlana, gave it her all, with several good chances to score. But, the Dutch defence was up to the task. Banyana Banyana’s coach, Desiree Ellis, praised her team’s accomplishments: “We’re disappointed with the loss, but so proud of how far this team has come.”
Though their World Cup dream ended here, South Africa leaves with heads held high, having advanced past the group stage for the first time ever. The team has inspired young players across the country and gained valuable experience on the world’s biggest stage.
