August 22, (THEWILL) – Italian club, AS Roma, have expressed interest in signing Mason Greenwood following the striker’s departure from Manchester United.
Greenwood left United after the conclusion of a six-month internal investigation into his conduct off the field. Roma manager, Jose Mourinho, is keen on a reunion with Greenwood, whom he promoted to United’s first team during his time at Old Trafford. The 21-year-old could help fill the void left by Tammy Abraham’s long-term injury. Roma believe a loan deal would allow Greenwood to revive his career away from the scrutiny at his former club.
United confirmed Greenwood will leave after determining his actions made it difficult for him to remain at the club. This comes after his arrest in January 2022 on suspicion of attempted rape, controlling behaviour and assault. He was later charged before the case collapsed.
In a statement, United said all parties agreed Greenwood moving was “most appropriate”. The club will now work to find him a new team, with his homegrown status making him an attractive option.
Atalanta, Inter Milan and clubs in Turkey, Germany and Spain are also reportedly interested in Greenwood. Wherever he ends up, it marks a dramatic fall for a player once seen as a rising star at one of the biggest clubs in world football.
