July 25, (THEWILL) – A season-long loan transfer of Valentin Castellanos from New York City FC to Girona, a recently promoted La Liga team has been finalised.
Last season, Castellanos led Major League Soccer (MLS) in scoring with 19 goals in 32 games, helping NYCFC win their first-ever MLS Cup.
In terms of goals scored thus far this season, the 23-year-old is tied with Austin FC’s Sebastian Driussi with two assists. For the better part of 18 months, there have been rumours that Castellanos would leave New York, but it was officially announced on Monday that he will remain with Girona through the summer of 2023.
The agreement between NYCFC and Girona, both of whom represent City Football Group (CFG), excludes the possibility of making the loan permanent. However, given that Castellanos’ relocation to one of Europe’s best divisions has only raised his reputation, NYCFC sporting director David Lee is willing to cash in on the player if the proper offer is made.
Castellanos joined NYCFC on an initial loan in 2018 from Uruguayan team Torque, one of their sister clubs, and has been a player at the MLS side for four and a half years. With 50 goals in 109 regular-season games, he ranks second in NYCFC history behind only the legendary David Villa of Spain.
