January 29, (THEWILL) – AC Milan’s season hit a new low as they suffered a 5-2 defeat to Sassuolo at home.

The Rossoneri were already in a crisis, with two points from three Serie A games and crashing out of both the Coppa Italia and Supercoppa Italiana. Despite having key players absent, including Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Theo Hernandez, who returned after a knock, Milan started well with Ante Rebic and Olivier Giroud both having early chances.

However, Sassuolo took the lead through Gregoire Defrel and doubled their advantage through Davide Frattesi. Milan managed to respond with a header from Giroud, but were unable to keep the momentum going as Domenico Berardi added to his two assists with a goal.

Sassuolo increased their lead with a penalty from Armand Lauriente and added a fifth through Matheus Henrique. Despite Sandro Tonali’s free-kick being flicked on for Ante Rebic’s half-volley, it was disallowed due to offside. Many Milan fans left the stadium before Divock Origi scored a spectacular goal from distance.

This result means that Milan have now conceded four goals in back-to-back Serie A games for the first time in their history and conceded five goals in a Serie A game at home for the first time since a 6-1 loss to Juventus in 1997. The Rossoneri will be looking to turn things around when they meet city rivals Inter Milan next Sunday.
