January 04, (THEWILL) – AC Milan started the new year with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Salernitana, moving them within five points of Serie A leaders, Napoli.
The match was dominated by Milan in the first half, with goals from Rafael Leao and Brahim Diaz, giving them a comfortable lead. However, Salernitana fought back in the second half and managed to score a late goal through Federico Bonazzoli, but it was not enough for a comeback.
Despite losing control in the second half, Milan held on for the win and could have scored more but for the impressive performances of goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa, who made several crucial saves to keep the visitors at bay.
The victory keeps Milan in the hunt for the defence of their Serie A title, with a strong run of form in the second half of the season likely to see them challenge to unseat Victor Osimhen’s I Partenopei from the top spot.
Milan will play Jose Mourinho’s Roma next, while Salernitana, which has suffered three consecutive losses and currently sits in 13th place, will host Torino on Sunday.
