BEVERLY HILLS, May 12, (THEWILL) – The Prelate of the Methodist Church of Nigeria, His Eminence Dr Samuel Emeka Kanu Uche, Jp, has attributed the rising level of insecurity in Nigeria to maladministration.

The Prelate made this known in Calabar during the Official Opening Ceremony of the 38th Council Of Bishops of the Church.

The weeklong event, which is holding at the Wesley Cathedral in Calabar, has as theme “Watch and Pray.”

He maintained that majority of the people felt that the government had turned its back on them.

He called governors across the country to be given the authority to be Chief Security Officers of their various states as obtainable in the United States, in order to help douse the tension in the land.

He said: “The problem of insecurity in Nigeria is mainly as a result of maladministration.

“People are reacting to the inaction or lack of courage on the part of the leadership because they are dissatisfied and very angry with maladministration and callousness on the part of the ruling class who are not even generating employment for the youth.

“These ugly developments have led to much hunger in the land and majority of the people think that the government has turned its back to the yearnings and aspirations of greater majority of Nigerians.”

On security, he said, “I want to urge that state governors be given the authority to be Chief Security Officers of their various states, having state police under their command as obtained in the United States of America.

“In addition, each community should have Community Police under the control of state Governor to monitor the criminal elements at the grassroots with a view to dousing the tension already created.”

He urged Nigerians to be security conscious, avoid fragmenting themselves, and assured that the Methodist Bishops would pray for the country and the state during the 38th Council of Bishops.

In his welcome address, the Archbishop of Calabar, Most Rev. Emmanuel Udofia, called for prayers for the state in the wake of the EndSARS protest that devastated the city.

He also sought God’s intervention in the state to tame the high rate of crime.

Sir Folu Aremu the Conference Lay President also, presented a speech during the opening ceremony which was also graced by representatives from the Obong of Calabar.

The 38th Council Of Bishops attracted over 90 bishops of the Methodist Church from across the country.
