November 15, (THEWILL) -In order for the cessation of rivalry between LIV and the PGA Tour, and to enable collaboration in the future, Rory McIlroy has demanded the exit of Greg Norman as LIV Golf commissioner.
The top-ranked golfer said: “There are a few things that I would like to see on the LIV side that needs to happen. I think Greg needs to go. I think he just needs to exit stage left. He’s made his mark, but I think now is the right time to sort of say, ‘Look, you’ve got this thing off the ground, but no one is going to talk unless there’s an adult in the room that can actually try to mend fences.”
Norman has served as president and commissioner of LIV Golf from its inception, functioning as its public face. Additionally, he has publicly criticised the PGA Tour’s business operations, inflaming hostilities between the rival golf leagues.
PGA Tour is being sued by LIV Golf and a number of its golfers for allegedly engaging in unethical business practices. The PGA Tour countersued LIV Golf, alleging that the company encouraged golfers to break their contracts. Norman has been a pioneer in the effort to entice celebrities to LIV with hefty sign-on bonuses.
McIlroy believes the situation can be better. He added: “It’s obviously been a very contentious year in golf,” McIlroy said. “And I’ve said this: The best thing in golf is to have all the best players playing together, and what’s happening right now, that’s not happening. So I fear for the game when that’s going on. It’s contentious because there are lawsuits going on and people suing people; it’s very, very messy.”
