Mbappe’s PSG Future In Doubt As Enrique Sidelines Star Ahead Of UCL Tie

March 04, (THEWILL) – Luis Enrique’s handling of Kylian Mbappe has overshadowed Paris Saint-Germain’s preparations for Tuesday’s crunch Champions League last-16 second leg away to Real Sociedad.

Despite PSG holding a 2-0 lead from the first leg at home, where Mbappe scored the opener, tensions have risen after the 25-year-old striker informed the club of his intention to leave when his contract expires in June.

The PSG coach might have been expected to maximise Mbappe’s talents before his anticipated summer exit. However, Luis Enrique has instead reduced the France captain’s playing time in recent weeks. Mbappe was an unused substitute in the win at Nantes, substituted on 65 minutes against Rennes, and incredibly hooked at half-time during Friday’s 0-0 draw at Monaco despite being fully fit.

“Sooner or later we are going to have to play without him, so I am trying to find the best way of doing so,” Luis Enrique stated, fuelling speculation of a rift with PSG’s all-time top scorer. The Spaniard also declared last week: “PSG will have a much better team next season”, an apparent hint at Mbappe’s expected Real Madrid move. The striker appeared eager to make a point at Monaco, changing into casual wear at half-time to watch the second half alongside his mother in the stands.

While PSG’s nine-point Ligue 1 lead allows Luis Enrique to experiment, his treatment of Mbappe ahead of such a pivotal European tie has drawn criticism. “I don’t understand. I get the impression he has been punished by the coach, or maybe the punishment has been imposed by the directors,” said former PSG defender Alain Roche. “It is inappropriate to create such a controversy four days before a game as important as the second leg.”

With 32 goals in 33 games this term, Mbappe will surely start in San Sebastian as PSG bid to avoid another European collapse after squandering strong first leg leads against Barcelona in 2017 and Real Madrid in 2022. Failure to progress could prove disastrous for player and club amid the escalating tensions.
