September 01, (THEWILL) – Kylian Mbappe scored twice in the second half to lead Real Madrid to a 2-0 victory over Real Betis in La Liga on Sunday.
The match was a demonstration of Madrid’s control of possession but they faced challenges against a well-structured Betis defence until they found the breakthrough in the 67th minute.
Mbappe opened the scoring with a close-range effort after a brilliant back-heel pass from Federico Valverde. The French forward quickly added a second goal from the penalty spot, following a foul on Vinicius Junior by goalkeeper Rui Silva just eight minutes later.
This victory propelled Madrid into second place in the league standings with eight points, four behind leaders Barcelona. In contrast, Betis find themselves near the bottom, sitting in 17th place with only two points.
Mbappe had faced heavy scrutiny after failing to score in his first three league appearances since his move from Paris Saint-Germain. However, he silenced critics by taking nine shots in total during the match, demonstrating his determination to find the net.
Defensively, Madrid has also shown strength, remaining unbeaten at home in their last 26 La Liga matches, with an impressive record of 22 wins and four draws. This is their best run in over a decade and they have not conceded a goal in their last five home league games, a feat they have not achieved since October 1996.
