Mbappe, Hakimi Goals See PSG Past Dortmund In UCL Opener

September 19, (THEWILL) – Paris Saint-Germain got their UEFA Champions League campaign off to a winning start with a 2-0 victory over Borussia Dortmund, at the Parc des Princes, on Tuesday night.

After a disappointing 3-2 defeat to Nice last Friday, manager, Luis Enrique, was looking for a reaction from his side in their first major test of the season so far. The hosts dominated possession in the first half, but struggled to create many clear chances against a stubborn Dortmund defence. PSG did have a penalty appeal dismissed after a VAR review for handball just before half-time.

However, they finally got a breakthrough right after the interval when Niklas Süle conceded a spot-kick for handball, allowing Kylian Mbappe to open the scoring. The second goal came just before the hour mark, with Achraf Hakimi combining well with Vitinha before beating Mats Hummels and finishing emphatically with the outside of his boot.

Dortmund did threaten a potential comeback late on, with substitute Jamie Bynoe-Gittens hitting the post and the visitors creating several other opportunities. Yet, PSG held on comfortably for the 2-0 win, putting in a controlled performance throughout. Manager Enrique will be pleased with the response after the Nice defeat, although sterner tests await in the UCL.

Domestically, PSG face a huge clash against rivals Marseille on Sunday in the first Le Classique of the campaign. Meanwhile, Dortmund will look to return to winning ways in the Bundesliga at home against Wolfsburg on Saturday.
