February 09, (THEWILL) – Paris Saint-Germain star, Kylian Mbappe, is set to miss his side’s upcoming Ligue 1 fixture against Lille on Saturday, after sustaining an ankle knock during Thursday’s French Cup victory over Brest.
Despite initial medical assessments proving reassuring, manager, Luis Enrique, is unwilling to risk the prized asset ahead of a crucial UEFA Champions League round of 16 first leg at home to Real Sociedad next week.
Further medical tests on the ankle are scheduled for Friday, though Mbappe’s immediate future at the club remains unclear regardless, with his contract expiring in the summer amid strong interest from Real Madrid. PSG’s own future at the Parc des Princes also looks doubtful, after club president Nasser Al-Khelaifi declared “it’s over” regarding an attempted purchase of their iconic home stadium from owners Paris City Council.
The Lille clash gives Les Parisiens a chance to continue their dominance of Ligue 1 this term. Victory would extend their lead to 11 points ahead of second-placed Nice, who host local rivals AS Monaco fresh off a 4-1 French Cup thrashing of Montpellier.
The culprit for Mbappe’s injury was Brest defender Lilian Brassier, who received online racist abuse following his red-card challenge. Brest, who sit third ahead of Sunday’s game with Clermont, strongly condemned the social media attacks on their player.
