February 05, (THEWILL) – Inter Milan dominated city rivals AC Milan in the Milan Derby on Sunday evening, with a solitary goal from Lautaro Martinez, being the difference between the two sides.
Inter controlled the tempo of the game from start to finish and were the most deserving of the three points. Despite their dominance, Inter were denied an early goal by a fantastic save from Ciprian Tatarusanu.
The veteran goalkeeper did his best to keep Inter at bay, but Martinez finally broke the deadlock in the 33rd minute with a well-placed header from a corner kick. The second half continued much like the first, with Inter in control and Martinez forcing Tatarusanu into another crucial save.
Milan tried to mount a comeback, but their efforts were lacking in quality and they were unable to get past Inter’s defence. In the dying moments of the game, Martinez thought he had doubled Inter’s lead, but the goal was disallowed after a VAR check ruled it offside.
The win keeps Inter in second place in the Serie A table, while defending champions Milan drop to sixth. Martinez’s performance was the standout of the match, and he was named man of the match. On Monday, Milan will seek to improve against Torino while Inter travels to Sampdoria on Monday.
